Writing Competition

As part of our MLK Celebration Community Initiative and in celebration of Black History Month, The Choral Arts Society of Washington hosts an annual writing competition for students in grades K-12. Each year, students are presented with a different writing prompt and are asked to respond in poetic form. Students are encouraged to be creative in their writing and to use their knowledge of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life, the Civil Rights Movement, and current events as inspiration for their writing.

Inspired by the dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, DC this fall, students are asked to respond in poetric form to the following prompt:
  • How will you keep Dr. King's dream alive for future generations?
The Choral Arts writing competition has four divisions and is open to all students. One winner will be selected from each division. In addition to having their poem published through Choral Arts website and print materials, each winner receives two complimentary tickets to the follow year's MLK Celebration Concert:
Division 1: Kindergarten through Grade 2
Division 2: Grades 3 through 5
Division 3: Grades 6 through 8
Division 4: Grades 9 through 12
To accommodate classroom study during Black History Month, all writing competition entries are due Friday, February 29, 2012
