In an effort to integrate the artsACCESS program into schools which would most benefit from it, CASW conducted an extensive community needs assessment. A vast number of teachers requested the assistance of the artsACCESS program to better equip their classrooms with the materials and training needed to integrate music and arts into their curriculum.

Four DCPS elementary schools were chosen:

Langdon Elementary

Orr Elementary

Slowe Elementary

Thomson Elementary

During the 2006-2007 school year, each artsACCESS classroom received:

  • Ten classroom visits by teaching artists. Over 370 visits took place during the 2006-2007 school year.
  • Professional development workshops for classroom and music teachers on arts integration techniques.
  • Curriculum books containing music-integrated, cross-curricular lesson plans tailored to the objectives of DCPS and national standards. Curriculum books are written with participating teachers’ input.
  • Classroom Treasure Chests containing CD/cassette players, video tapes, and writing journals, designed to compliment music-integrated lesson plans.
