Now in its 20th year, the Annual Choral Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has come to be one of the Choral Arts Society’s most beloved concerts of the season. The concert, which takes place in the concert hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, was originally organized by the society and its artistic director, Norman Scribner, to commemorate Dr. King’s life in the year following his assassination. In 1989, the year in which the US instituted the MLK holiday, CASW presented its first annual tribute.

The Tribute unifies individuals from all parts of the community to honor Dr. King's ideals of non-violence, racial equality and peace. This concert has a low admission fee of 20 dollars to stimulate broad and diverse participation from the metropolitan area.  More than 250 complimentary tickets are provided annually to youth organizations, homeless shelters, mentor organizations and D.C. public schools.  In addition, more than 50,000 Washingtonians hear the performance broadcast on WETA-FM on the day of the National Holiday.
